Faculty and students of Coral Reef Montessori Academy gathered on Monday, Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to honor the legacy of Dr. King and to commemorate the peace education philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori.

Coral Reef Montessori Academy is a Miami-based charter school with a tradition of offering a holistic education for nearly 600 pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students. The event was its 15th annual Peace and Social Justice March and Assembly, reflecting the school’s commitment to fostering harmony, understanding and unity within the community and embodying the principles of peace and nonviolence advocated by such influential figures as Dr. King, Dr. Montessori and others throughout the world.

Students, faculty, families and community members came together for this event, creating a powerful display of solidarity and shared values. The march took place within the school premises, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence and respect for diversity.

The 2024 Peace and Social Justice March complemented the academy’s Winter Poetry Festival’s theme of world peace. Now in its 25th year, the Winter Poetry Festival is a cherished annual celebration that showcases the creativity and literary talents of the school’s students. This festival offers a platform for students to express themselves through the art of poetry, fostering a lifelong love for literature and creative expression.

The academy’s annual Peace Walk provided a tangible way for the faculty and students to demonstrate and teach the importance of peace in resolving conflicts, respecting differences and fostering harmonious relationships.

The event also recognized the advocacy groups and their leaders that were influenced by Dr. King and Dr. Montessori, as well as lesser-known practitioners of peace. The march served as a tribute to their teachings and philosophies and educated participants about their impact on society.

Founded by two Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers — Juliet King and Lucy Canzoneri-Golden — in 1998, Coral Reef Montessori Academy Charter School (CRMA) strives for excellence in all areas of Montessori education. CRMA is currently 1 of 19 public Montessori schools that’s dual accredited through AMS and COGNIA.

Coral Reef Montessori Academy Charter School is located at 10853 SW 216 St., Miami, FL 33170. The website can be visited at https://www.coralreefmontessori.com/.
