WHO:
ICA Narratives is a community arts program taught by Miami-based teaching artists with the goal to increase self-esteem and provide exposure and access to the arts that allows participants to express their own narrative through creative work.
Over the course of eight weeks, students participated in a series of alternative photography workshops that spoke and reflected on the concept of identity as affected by displacement in analyzing immigration via exile, gentrification in their neighborhoods, race and gender-based systemic issues, and ecological concerns.
“Uprooted” is curated and organized by Isabella Marie Garcia, Teaching Artist, and Jessica Helsinger, Narratives Outreach Site Coordinator.
Educational programming at ICA Miami facilitates key partnerships with local community and governmental organizations to connect under-resourced youth and adults throughout Miami-Dade County to art, empowerment, and critical thinking. Programming includes: Young Artists Initiative, ICA Miami’s marquee program for teens; Portfolio Prep for Middle School Artists, Family Day (every third Sunday of the month); partnerships with public schools to implement arts programming; and service through ICA Narratives to underserved partners; immersive school tours, special access tours, internships and more.
