The City of North Miami was selected among 112 US communities to receive technical support and capacity building through the United States Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) competitive FY23 Thriving Communities Program (TCP). North Miami also holds the distinction of being the only Florida-based TCP recipient.
This program provides two years of no-cost, intensive technical assistance to help under-resourced and disadvantaged communities, like North Miami, identify, develop and deliver transportation projects to achieve various means of locally-driven economic development. The TCP prioritized communities working to advance transportation projects that improve health and safety outcomes, reduce housing and transportation cost burdens, preserve or expand job opportunities and increase reliable mobility options to better access healthcare, food, education and other essential destinations.
Through the program, the City of North Miami seeks to provide a safe, convenient and efficient motorized and non-motorized transportation system for all of the City’s residents and visitors.
For the duration of this program, City of North Miami staff will be partnered with Abt Associates Inc., the TCP Capacity Builder team funded and assigned by the USDOT. North Miami’s Assigned Capacity Builders will provide project-level technical assistance. Additionally, as part of the application criteria, the City of North Miami was mandated to identify two community partners for this project. Selected partner organizations were the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce and the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Florida.

Through the years, we’ve invested greatly in strategic transportation planning. As preparation of North Miami’s official Mobility Plan nears completion, with great expectation I await the many innovative and out-of-the-box transportation and mobility possibilities we’ll be positioned to explore by merging our internal knowledge and resource base with our new federal partnership, and existing state and local partnerships.”
In the last year through TCP, the DOT helped urban, rural and tribal communities identify and develop grant applications for critical infrastructure projects. This year’s selected TCP communities and assigned Capacity Builders will begin working together in Summer 2024.
