Mark Merwitzer, candidate for Palmetto Vice Mayor

“Growing up in Palmetto Bay, I have seen firsthand the challenges our community faces, from traffic congestion and overdevelopment to a lack of government transparency and responsiveness to residents’ needs,” said Mark. “I am running for Vice Mayor to be a strong voice for the people of Palmetto Bay and ensure that our hometown values and interests always come first.”

Mark’s dedication to the community began at a young age, and he has consistently stepped up to tackle pressing issues, most notably leading a successful statewide coalition to pass legislation cracking down on the dangers of distracted driving.

“I believe that our village government should foster the aspirations of our young people, listen to the concerns of all residents, and make decisions based on the best interests of our community, not special interests or politicians,” said Mark. “As Vice Mayor, I pledge to fight tirelessly for better transit solutions, low development, and a more resilient future for Palmetto Bay.”

Mark Merwitzer graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in political science and a minor in urban planning. His community involvement includes serving on the Palmetto Bay Education Advisory Committee and chairing the Palmetto Bay Youth Community Involvement Board. Notably, Mark has received numerous accolades for his work on texting-while-driving legislation. He conducted extensive policy research on this issue, authored resolutions adopted by local governments, and built coalitions with elected officials, civic organizations, and affected families to advocate for change in the Florida Legislature. Currently, Mark is a policy director at Transit Alliance, a local non-profit dedicated to creating more walkable streets, bikeable neighborhoods, and better public transit options.
