Florida’s First Blue Zone: A Lesson in Living Healthy

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Over 20 years ago, regions were discovered around the world where people were flourishing well past the age of 100. These areas became known as Blue Zones. Now com-munities, such as Ave Maria, are using the secrets found in these Blue Zones to help people live better and longer. Blue Zones Project® is a community well-being initiative with the goal of decreasing chronic disease and helping residents live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

A local example is Ave Maria, a master planned community nestled in Southwest Florida, one of the first places in Florida and the Southeast U.S. to achieve a Blue Zones Community Certification. “It’s rewarding to witness the positive impact Blue Zones has brought to Ave Maria, and as a community, we understand how important healthy social living is to our residents,” said Carol DiFlorio, Lifestyle Director for the Ave Maria Master Association, who managed the process of applying for the certification. “The Blue Zones Project is the perfect match for life improvement our residents seek.”

Jorge Pino, for example, is a retired law enforcement officer and golf enthusiast who enjoys the town’s championship courses: Lennar’s The National Golf & Country Club and Panther Run Golf Club at Del Webb Naples. “It’s wonderful for an avid golfer to have two championship courses a half-mile from each other,” he shared. Ave Maria’s adoption of the Blue Zones Power 9® principles focuses on moving naturally, maintaining a healthy outlook, eating wisely and connection. Living in Ave Maria gives Jorge the opportunity to live out the Blue Zones values. As a walkable and bike able community, Jorge can reach recreational facilities, medical services, shopping and dining options in minutes. An active calendar of events fills his schedule and keeps him connected to his community.

From water aerobics at the water park to co-ed softball games in South Park, residents find a common ground to connect. “Gathering as a community to improve quality of life really defines the Ave Maria lifestyle,” Pino added.

When not in Ave Maria, there are ways you can live out the Blue Zones motivators. Visit your local park, join a walking or biking club, research restaurants that have healthier menu options, and connect with networking groups via social media. Blue Zones is no secret – just a roadmap on how to live your most healthy and fulfilled life.

FAIRWAYS AND GREENS

Jorge has a busy life in Ave Maria. He’s the club champion at Panther Run, which is the golf course in his neighborhood. And when he isn’t playing over there, he’s teeing it up at The National, a golf cart commute from his home. “It’s wonderful for an avid golfer to have two championship courses a half mile from each other,” he says. Jorge is also a cancer survivor. “It made me think about life, think about what I was doing. There’s that old saying: a bad day on the golf course beats a good day at work.

Thankfully, I beat the cancer. And every day’s a great day at Ave Maria.” The life you’ve been thinking about could be just down the road in Ave Maria, A Big Kind of Small Town.
