Broward Community Newspapers firmly supports Darlene Smith for Pompano Beach District 5 Commissioner. Smith brings expertise and a vision for a brighter future to her community, exhibiting a track record of steadfast dedication to her community.

Since 2003, Darlene and her husband Dave have been key figures in the Palm-Aire neighborhood of Pompano Beach. Darlene’s leadership roles in small business, public service, and various voluntary activities, projects, and positions have sharpened her skills. Her extensive experience spans serving on the City of Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board, the Economic Development Council of the City of Pompano Beach, and as President of the Palm-Aire Country Club Homeowners Association for over a decade.

Among Smith’s most notable achievements is leading the Lakes Project, which transformed Palm-Aire’s abandoned golf courses into picturesque lakes and completely revitalized this sprawling community. She serves as chair of the Lakes, Trails, and Green Space Committee, where she collaborates with local authorities to improve and preserve the local environment. Committed to community engagement, Smith founded “Trail Walker’s Gatherings,” a grassroots group for walkers, cyclists, runners, and dog walkers in Palm-Aire.

Smith’s leadership extends beyond environmental programs. She is the treasurer of a Christian church in Fort Lauderdale and an involved member of Palm Aire United, where she advocates for issues significant to all neighborhood citizens. Since 1986, she has managed Phase One Computing Services, an accounting software company, as president and founder – demonstrating a successful business acumen.

Smith’s vision for Pompano Beach includes improving local multimodal transportation, planned development, and protecting property values. She is also a steadfast advocate for employment development, affordable housing, and gun safety.

Because of her proven leadership, passion for her community, and successful urban renewal projects, Broward Community Newspapers fully backs Darlene Smith’s bid for District 5 Commissioner of Pompano Beach – and in doing so we join a long list of prominent figures in Pompano Beach city government who also endorse her campaign: Mayor Rex Hardin, District 5 Commissioner Barry Moss, District 2 Commissioner Rhona Eaton, and District 5 Commissioner (2004-14) George Brummer.
