The Emmy and Gold Medal Award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYSmusic.org) recently concluded its 59th season with a standing-room-only concert at the William and Joan Lehman Theater at Miami Dade College’s North Campus.
The concert featured student soloists Samuel Aldana (violin), Anthony Gauthier (French horn) and David Lopez (clarinet) as well as all the training divisions of the SFYS program — including String Training Classes (Ruth Jauregui, Priscille Michel, Gianluca Nagaro — directors), Brass Choir (Armando Alicando — director), Symphonic Wind Ensemble (Lowell Thomas — director, Anibal Hernandez — conductor) Cello Classes (Benjamin Bush — teacher), String Consort Orchestra (Laura Bass — director, Natalie Richard — assistant), Symphonic Chamber Strings (Angelica Losada — director) and the Youth Symphony (Marjorie Hahn — director, Richard A. Zogaib — associate conductor).
“This was one of our most inspiring, family-oriented concerts,” said Marjorie Hahn, SFYS executive and music director. “Additionally, because we featured all of the developing classes and orchestras, our concert provided the community with insight into the wide range of opportunities for students who want to join the Youth Symphony program.”
The season-ending concert finale also begins the planning for the SFYS’s landmark 60th anniversary season, starting with their 60th Jubilee Emerald Gala on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Miami Shores Country Club.
The next day, Nov. 10, the SFYS will perform a rousing Veterans Day Concert at Losner Park in Homestead, followed by a Dec. 15 Holiday Concert at the Lehman Theater.
Continuing its Jubilee celebration, the Youth Symphony will perform its unique inside/outside concert at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on Mar. 2, followed by the Brass Choir, Strings and Symphonia concert on Mar. 8, at Coral Gables Sanctuary of the Arts.
The SFYS will then continue with the tradition that has made it one of the country’s leading youth music organizations — a Mar. 22-28 International Concert Tour to Austria.
The season concludes May 18 with a Grand 60th Jubilee Season Finale Concert at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center Concert Hall on the FIU Tamiami Campus.
The South Florida Youth Symphony program is sponsored with the support of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, State of Florida Division of Arts & Culture, Miami Dade County Office of Management and Budget, The Kirk Foundation, The Nancy Friday Foundation and Miami Dade College, North Campus.
