Appearing recently on the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust video podcast Mobility Matters, Florida State Representative Alina Garcia (District 115) urged Miami-Dade County residents to get involved in public issues.

“I want to ensure that our county, and our state, and our country continue to go in the right direction and that we leave a better society for our families… a better place where they can work, play and raise their own children,” Garcia told Mobility Matters host Javier Betancourt, who is also the Executive Director of CITT.  “Government is complex, and unless you understand the way things work, it’s difficult to get things done even if you are an elected official,” she added.  “I urge everybody to be involved and I urge everyone to make sure that they go out and vote.”

I always tell people it’s very important to be involved in government because there’s a lot affecting each aspect of your life I urge everybody to be involved and I urge everyone to make sure that they go out and vote.

Garcia, who became involved in government by volunteering on a local campaign, said it doesn’t matter one’s party affiliation, volunteering is a good way to start.

“It’s important to find new people, young people that have that fire in the belly.  People that want to change the world, and they want to make things right. That’s important, Garcia said.

She also stressed the need for a sound public education as a foundation for the future.

As to the future of transportation, Garcia said with the development of autonomous vehicles, once the technology is fully developed and tested, these vehicles can help reduce traffic accidents because there will be no operator error.

Mobility Matters airs every other Thursday between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.  To view the podcast on CITT’s Facebook page, visit:  Facebook.com/TransportationTrust
