Gables Rotarians’ monthly bingo games at the Veterans Hospital have returned to the delight of those at the facility. Rotarians finally were given the okay to return after the halt due to COVID and the subsequent caution after most everything had returned to normal.
For the Rotary volunteers, sharing time with the veterans is rewarding and fun. From helping disabled vets play the game to providing snacks and prizes (gift certificates for the canteen), Gables Rotarians there included Sally Baumgartner, Yoli Woodbridge, Robert Bedell, Jennifer Kila and Christine Constant. Veterans were so happy to have the event return and are looking forward to this fun activity on the third Saturday of every month.
Speaking of Coral Gables Rotary, the July 27 meeting was packed with interesting people and information. The guest speaker, one of many great ones this club manages to attract, was Roberto A Rodriquez, deputy supervisor Miami-Dade County Elections Department.
This was a timely and informative meeting with lots of Q&As.
At that same meeting the club installed Robert Bedell as a new member. Robert, a retired firefighter, is a hometown boy who played Rugby for Gulliver and then in college and beyond. He promises to be an exciting new member for this club that meets every Thursday, noon, for lunch at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Visiting Rotarians are aways welcomed.
Rotary President Jim Skinner, who presided over the July 27 meeting, introduced some very impressive guests including wife and former Judge Maria Korvick, as well as his daughter, Julia Palzer, and granddaughter, Luciana, visiting from Nebraska.
As an interesting aside, Julia is an attorney and a member of the Omaha Rotary’s night club and is running for the Nebraska Legislature, a unicameral, non-partisan body of 49 senators for District 9 (MIDTOWN). This is the only state with a unicameral legislature and Julia is running for the most important district that is home to the largest employer in Nebraska as well as the largest provider of healthcare in Nebraska.
The Junior Orange Bowl held its summer mixer at JohnMartin’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in the Gables on July 18. Lots of new faces were in the mix, including some newer members taking on leadership roles. Longtime member Jennifer Forbes’ daughter, Sophia Espaillat, who recently earned her master’s degree in English, is back from FSU and will be chairing the Jr. OB’s Creative Writing contest. Among the others enjoying the affair were Jr. OB president Michael Green, past president and current treasurer Lisa Albizu-Vazquez, Alysse Fisher, and past presidents Chuck Little and Grant Souviron.
On the topic of summer mixer, Coral Gables Woman’s Club president and first vice president Iris Segui recently treated the board for a wine tasting by PRP Wines with appetizers and dinner. The affair took place at the newly renovated Kendall home of Will and Iris Segui, so it gave everyone a chance to see the transformation that took a year or so to complete.
Next up for the club is its Gringo Bingo fundraiser at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen on Aug. 13, 7-9 p.m. This one will benefit ACE Academy, Tucker Elementary and Voices for Children. To RSVP, send email to gloria@cnews.net.
Orange Blossom Classic (OBC) kicks off football season with two out of state teams for the first time in its history on Aug. 31. OBC executive director Kendra Bulluck was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE to talk about ongoing plans for the weekend that includes a historic game between No. 3 North Carolina Central and No. 6 Alabama State. This top-10 HBCU matchup at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens signifies a new era for the Classic setting the stage for a potential preview of the Celebration Bowl, highlighting a championship-level competition between the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
