The Miami Foundation recently announced Karen Peterson and Dancers Inc. as a recipient of its first-ever Catalyst Grants.
It is one of 12 grantees receiving multi-year grants, up to $20,000 distributed over two years, to fund arts education programs, initiatives, and organizations in Miami-Dade County.
Intended to address opportunities for strengthened arts partnerships between nonprofit organizations and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Catalyst Grant program leverages data in artlook Miami to close gaps in arts education across the region.
“We are honored to receive this award from The Miami Foundation to continue our work with teens with special needs in the Miami-Dade Public Schools,” said artistic director Karen Peterson Corash. “The funds will help us develop our ongoing dance residency program with additional classroom instruction and performance opportunities.”
The grants are part of The Miami Foundation’s program, Arts Access Miami, which aims to bring the transformational power of arts and music education to all youth. Access to arts is vital to achieving the foundation’s goal of building a greater Miami where everyone can thrive. When young people connect with the arts, they have a greater ability to problem solve, be open to new ideas, and find purpose in their lives.
To be eligible for a Catalyst Grant, organizations had to meet multiple criteria, including being a 501(c)(3) public charity serving Miami-Dade County’s young people through the arts, having a 2024 operating budget of less than $750,000, and having a focus on equity.
For this grant cycle, The Miami Foundation selected organizations, such as Karen Peterson and Dancers, that prioritized areas of need identified in the Artistic Director Karen Peterson Corash artlook Miami tool. This included more access to dance and theatre, as well as opportunities for partnerships that provide artist residencies and arts education-centered professional development for teachers.
“The Miami Foundation is more than a funding source; we are partners in change,” said Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “We are committed to working closely with each selected grant recipient throughout the grant period to provide guidance, additional resources, and facilitate opportunities for meaningful collaboration and growth.”
While the grant cycle has closed, nonprofits can still leverage the free artlook Miami tool to connect with schools and other arts organizations, creating an even stronger arts ecosystem.
