The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2012 Jeanne Bellamy scholarship recipient — Mayen Vergara, a senior at the School for Advanced Studies with a grade point average of 5.6.
Vergara, who plans to attend the University of Miami and major in business, received a $2,500 college scholarship.
Vergara’s dream to pursue a degree in business and one day start her own business originates from working at her uncle’s auto shop. She was inspired to take economic and business classes as part of her high school curriculum to fulfill a passion she has for the science that deals with production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.
Vergara also is involved deeply in her community. She has logged thousands of volunteer hours with the Gay Straight Alliance, Miami International Book Fair, Clitoraid Organization and the Michael Ann Russell Jewish Community Center, caring for young children in the center’s summer camp.
The chamber’s annual scholarship award is named in honor of Jeanne Bellamy, who served as the chamber’s first female chair from 1977 to 1978. A truly remarkable woman, Bellamy’s contributions during her term as chair, as well as her ongoing efforts on behalf of the community and her career in business, truly exemplifies the spirit of this award. The annual scholarship was augmented by a $1,000 contribution from College Admissions Assistance.
