Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic breaks mold for sports sedans

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

For generations, the E-Class has both defined and redefined the luxury sport sedan. With intelligent digital technology, a mild hybrid turbo inline-6, all-wheel drive and breathtaking style, the E-Class continues to set a standard for sedans.

Starting at $71,000, the Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic sets the bar as a top sedan that combines luxury and performance seamlessly. I love driving the E 450 because it looks and feels amazing on the road. The suspension is phenomenal, so it feels like I’m driving a cloud.

The 3-liter, 6 cylinder automatic E 450 delivers 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 miles per gallon on the highway, for a combined 25 miles per gallon.

The engine offers 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, which makes a drive feel like a straightaway on the speed track.

One of the things I really enjoy about the E 450 is “geeking” out on the engine. For performance nerds this is your wheelhouse.

The lightweight, beltless engine is electrified with an integrated starter-generator that can add up to 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, allow gas-free coasting, and recapture energy during deceleration. With a twin-scroll turbo, variable valve lift, and friction-reducing nanoslide cylinder walls, the gas engine outputs the aforementioned 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque on its own.

Advanced piezoelectric fuel injectors spray fuel directly into each cylinder with exceptionally precise metering, ultrafine atomization and incredibly quick on/off switching speed. Based on the immediate, individual needs of each cylinder’s combustion cycle, they can supply the ideal fuel spray at up to 2,900 psi with millisecond speed. Rapid-multispark ignition can fire the fuel mixture up to five times in a single cycle, for stronger and cleaner performance.

The cylinder walls of the diecast aluminum block are created in a patented process that benefits performance, efficiency and durability. Nanoslide technology uses a twin-wire arc spray to coat the bores with an ultrahard layer that’s honed to an ultralow-friction, mirror-like finish. Without the added weight of cylinder liners, the bores and lightweight forged pistons are matched with even greater dimensional precision, for more immediate and consistent power over a longer service life.

All of this works seamlessly together to get you from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds, which is literally the time it takes to blink twice. So, if what you want is speed, the E 450 4Matic is the sedan for you.

I can’t say enough great things about the Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic, which puts you in a dominant position on the road. You will feel like driving is a superpower. Give the E450 a drive and tell me what you think.
