Lion Farms offers wide variety of organic Florida mushrooms
Mushroom varieties available include lion’s mane, pioppino, blue oyster, chestnut and black king oyster, among others.

Pinecrest resident Peter Fedele is South Florida’s undisputed king of gourmet mushrooms.

On 15 acres in the Redland, just south of Miami, Fedele runs Lion Farms, a zero-waste, 100 percent organic regenerative farm producing nearly a dozen varieties of gourmet mushrooms available for sale and delivery to local homes and restaurants.

The farm also produces subtropical fruit including bananas, sugar apples, soursop and avocados, as well as turmeric, microgreens, organic chicken eggs, aquaponics-raised Nile perch and New Zealand rabbits.

“We’re excited to share our love of organic farming and gourmet mushrooms with the South Florida community,” Fedele explained. “Our focus on sustainability, quality and fast delivery makes us stand out in the industry. Ordering from us means you get locally grown mushrooms delivered within hours of harvest.”

Lion Farms’ mushrooms are cultivated within a 10,000-square-foot controlled environment agricultural building — a state-of-the-art facility providing an environment that optimizes temperature, humidity, lighting and air quality. Mushroom varieties available include lion’s mane, pioppino, blue oyster, chestnut and black king oyster, among others.

“Our farm strives to create a harmonious balance between nature and technology providing a large-scale reliable and eco-conscious source of gourmet mushrooms year-round,” he said.

Everything begins with worms. Lion Farms is Florida’s largest worm farm, where food scraps and organic matter are processed into compost and then fed to thousands of earthworms in large containers. The worm manure is collected, bagged and blended with other organic nutrients into an all-natural “worm tea” that, when applied in liquid form, enriches the farm’s soil tremendously. Lion Farms also can deliver and apply its worm tea to backyards and commercial farms.

Through a collaboration with Florida International University’s agricultural department, Lion Farms sponsors several doctoral candidates who work onsite to conduct research and develop innovative solutions in the field of sustainable agriculture. This partnership enables Lion Farms to stay at the forefront of agricultural advancements and contribute to the development of sustainable farming practices.

“Our philosophy as an organic regenerative farm is grounded in sustainability, holistic thinking, and a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings,” Fedele explained. “We strive to farm in a way that not only produces wholesome and nutritious food but also builds soil fertility, promotes biodiversity, minimizes synthetic inputs and ensures the long-term viability of the farm by preserving the natural resources for future generations.”
