Within the first week of Hurricane Helene’s landfall, Farm Share, the state’s leading food nonprofit and largest independent food bank, has already deployed over 1.5 million pounds, or nearly 37 semi trucks, of shelf-safe food, water, and hygiene products. Farm Share has delivered supplies to 29 impacted counties, including Gadsden, Liberty, Suwannee, Columbia, Citrus, Hernando, Marion, Pasco, Dixie, Franklin, Walkulla, Taylor, Leon, Hamilton, Hillsborough, Levy, Madison, Sarasota, Lee, Pinellas, Putnam, Alachua, Jefferson, Gilchrist, Volusia, Lake, Calhoun, Charlotte and St. Johns.
“We’re stepping up our disaster response to deliver essential aid, food, and water to the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Helene,” said Stephen Shelly, CEO of Farm Share. “Families are enduring heartbreaking losses — their homes, businesses, and loved ones. No one should have to worry about where their next meal or clean water will come from in times like this.”
Farm Share is working closely with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, local emergency management officials, and its own statewide network of community partners to optimize response efforts and conduct community relief operations in areas most affected by the storm.
In addition to these efforts, Farm Share has partnered with Global Empowerment Mission to establish a base camp in Perry, Fla. This base camp will serve as a central hub for distributing critical supplies, including shelf-stable food, water, and hygiene products, to communities that have been decimated by the storm. Together with GEM, Farm Share is working to ensure that families in the hardest-hit areas receive the immediate support they need to begin the recovery process.
In the aftermath of a hurricane or other natural disasters, Farm Share’s relief efforts focus on the critical days and weeks immediately following a storm, frequently serving communities within 24 hours. After Hurricanes Ian in 2022, Idalia in 2023, and most recently Debby, Farm Share delivered more than 70 truckloads of food, water, and supplies within 14 days of the storms making landfall, providing over 2.6 million pounds of aid to affected communities. When disasters strike, Farm Share stands ready to help families in need.
Additional details about Farm Share’s Hurricane Helene response efforts will be provided as they become available.
