Miami’s Community Newspapers is proud to endorse Democrat Joe Saunders for the Florida House of Representatives, District 106. Joe Saunders is an award-winning advocate for progress who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to equality, prosperity, and justice for all Floridians. As a longtime Miami Beach resident, he understands the unique needs of our community and is prepared to return to the Florida House to continue his tireless work.
Joe’s journey began as a student organizer at the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he earned four degrees, including two master’s degrees. In 2012, Joe made history by becoming one of Florida’s first openly LGBTQ lawmakers. During his time in the Florida House, he championed public education, affordable housing, and economic justice, never wavering in his advocacy for the LGBTQ community.
Beyond the legislature, Joe has remained on the front lines of the fight for equality. As a former senior staff member of the Human Rights Campaign and the current Senior Political Director of Equality Florida, he has played a pivotal role in advancing LGBTQ rights, reproductive freedom, and gun violence prevention. His dedication has earned him national recognition, including being named to Out Magazine’s “Out 100” list for his leadership following the Pulse Nightclub tragedy.
In addition to his advocacy, Joe is a dedicated educator at Florida International University, where he engages future leaders in public policy and nonprofit management. He is deeply involved in the Miami Beach community, serving on local boards and committees that focus on smart growth, transportation solutions, and supporting our tourism economy.
Joe’s campaign addresses the critical issues facing our community:
- Property Insurance: Joe’s plan emphasizes accountability for insurance companies, fair access to the courts, and strengthening Citizen’s Insurance to protect coastal communities.
- Condo Law Reform: Joe’s plan includes low-interest loans for condo owners and extended timelines for compliance, ensuring that residents, especially seniors, can stay in their homes.
- Reproductive Freedom: Joe stands firmly for the right of Floridians to make their own healthcare decisions, advocating for the passage of Amendment 4 to nullify restrictive abortion bans and enshrine reproductive freedom in the Florida Constitution.
- Healthcare: Joe is committed to expanding Medicaid and unlocking billions in federal funding that would provide critical healthcare services to our most vulnerable populations.
- Public Education: Joe is dedicated to supporting teachers, investing in public schools, and ensuring that every child has access to a top-quality education. He opposes the politicization of classrooms.
- Environmental Protection: Joe’s plan for Biscayne Bay includes stormwater management, reversing preemptions on local environmental protections, and deeper analysis of the impact of boating on the Bay’s ecosystems.
Joe Saunders is more than just a candidate; he is a community leader who has consistently fought for what is right, both inside and outside the legislature. His experience, dedication, and deep connection to the needs of District 106 make him the ideal choice for Florida House.
