The Ceramic League of Miami (CLM) is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing appreciation for the ceramic arts and educating members and the public in all aspects of ceramics.

As the group approaches its 75th anniversary, it continues to promote ceramics through its community school, membership program, visiting artist workshops, its Sunday booth at the Pinecrest Farmer’s Market, monthly podcast at Miami’s Community Newspapers, Maker’s Markets and much more.

This October is especially busy at CLM. It currently is completing Session 1 of classes and Session 2 starts on Oct. 28. Classes are available in a variety of pottery methods for beginners and advanced students. Registration for classes is available on its website at www.ceramicleaguemiami.org.

CLM is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a Maker’s Market Fiesta on Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at its studios located at 8873 SW 129 St. The event is a nod to Hispanic culture which has impacted the art of pottery in profound ways. From pre-Columbian times to the present, Hispanics continue to impact pottery and crafts nationally as well as here in Miami.

Makers will include wood turners, jewelry makers, the You Make Unit from the Miami-Dade County Public Library System, as well as potters. The day will include craft demonstrations, studio tours and the opportunity to purchase unique, handcrafted items from CLM’s makers and gallery.

During the month of October, CLM is completing a hands-on workshop to create water filtration vessels in support of Good Foundations International, formally known as Potters for Peace. This organization helps bring potable water and hygiene programs to underserved communities worldwide, including Central and South America, with the emphasis on women’s physical and economic health.

The work created at the workshop currently is on display at the Wirtz Gallery at the United Community Bank in South Miami. At the end of the exhibition, the pieces will be auctioned during an event, hosted by Books and Books in Coral Gables, with Rachel Silverstein from Miami Waterkeepers. Proceeds will be donated to Good Foundations International.

Also in October, CLM is welcoming Lisa Orr, an American potter and teacher of ceramics, for a hands-on workshop. Her work is included in public and private collections, nationally and internationally. Orr, along with the participants, will be building one of her Rocket kiln designs, that use wood for fuel, utilizing a disused electric kiln body along with bricks and some metal tubing.

The workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27, at CLM starting at 10 a.m. Orr also is conducting a free slide presentation at CLM on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.

During the month of November, CLM will be engaged in a major fundraising effort to benefit makers impacted by Hurricane Helene. The month-long campaign will culminate with a Maker’s Market on Nov. 30 at CLM.
