Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is launching Edu-PARTNERS thanks to a $9.5 million, five-year grant by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) to enhance training for all prospective teachers and their mentors through a partnership with Miami Dade College.
“This grant gives us a unique opportunity to recruit candidates to mentor and support in the early stages of the teaching profession in order to ultimately create retention and build capacity,” says Maribel Dotres, administrative director, Office of Professional Learning and Career Development.
The initiative Edu-PARTNERS – an acronym for Preparation, Apprenticeship, Residency, Teaching, New Educator Readiness, and Support – provides a comprehensive focus on expanding teacher recruitment efforts by offering affordable pathways for qualified individuals to enter the teaching profession.
“This enhances apprenticeship opportunities that combine coursework with paid on-the-job training and provides an immersive experience in high-needs schools with high quality mentors,” added Dawn M. Baglos, Chief Human Capital Officer at M-DCPS.
New educators are supported in their first two years through a structured mentoring program and ongoing professional learning opportunities. The courses are created by Miami Dade College’s Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) at the School of Education. EPI ranks among the highest-performing teacher preparation programs in Florida, with more than 85 percent of graduates having passed the applicable state qualification assessments for new teachers and with Florida Teach Certification Examination Pass Rates that meet or exceed the statewide average.
According to Dotres, although the grant program begins in October, the Teacher Apprenticeship Program was initiated this school year with approximately 70 participants.
As the third largest school district in the country, M-DCPS consistently seeks to hire diverse talent to address the challenges in attracting and retaining qualified educators, particularly for high-needs schools. These teachers ensure that our vibrant student population receives an “A-rated” quality education and instruction. These efforts will ultimately improve student achievement in all areas of teaching.
“Edu-PARTNERS directly addresses these challenges by enhancing recruitment strategies,” explains Baglos. “The program focuses on attracting individuals from diverse backgrounds who are passionate about teaching and committed to serving the unique needs of M-DCPS students.”
Through scholarships and financial support, Edu-PARTNERS makes teacher preparation accessible to a broader range of individuals.
“Overall, the Edu-partners Grant will contribute to the professional growth of new educators and can positively impact student learning,” said Dotres.
Thanks to strategic partnerships and grant opportunities, M-DCPS is your best choice, offering innovative ways to attract, hire, develop and retain high-quality teachers who provide our students the world-class education they deserve.
