Community activities usher in festive fall season

Fall is here with better weather and lots of great events. Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Oct. 22 Gringo Bingo was among them. The monthly Gringo Bingo enjoyed a new location at Grand Living (formerly Watermark, at 363 Granello) where this fundraiser was like none other with a few guests dressed for Halloween.

Some surprise performances added to the night of fun and games. Sue Padalino’s talented daughter, Lucy Lopez, sang Fly Me to the Moon during a short break while throughout the evening Athena Atkinson’s little girls entertained the crowd with some dance moves that were equally entertaining.

Not only did Grand Living offer an upgraded menu and lots of wine, they also provided a beautiful venue where the club will return for the Nov. 19 Gringo Bingo.

Kudos to Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless and Jerry Kavulich for their ongoing sponsorships and to Grand Living’s Rene and Rita Tennyson for making the affair special. Tickets for the next event include food, one drink, 13 game cards, music by DJ Germain, and lots of fun with emcee Steven Bradley, the Gringo.

For reservations or more information, email gloria@cnews.net.

The event will move again on Dec. 10 to the newly renovated Birdie Bistro (the old Burger Bob’s at the Granada Golf Course). Proceeds will benefit CGWC’s many outreach efforts.

Rotary Club of Coral Gables’ outreach and fundraising efforts are filling the fall calendar.

From monthly bingo events for the veterans at the VA Hospital and serving the homeless on Thanksgiving Day to weekly Thursday lunches with high profile guest speakers, this club offers ongoing opportunities to serve our community.

For Veterans Day, the club has a fundraiser on Nov. 5, 5-9 p.m., at the Coral Gables Cinema. The affair will feature the movie Searching for HOME: Coming Back from War.

Before the viewing, event coordinator RCCG’s secretary and past president Sally Baumgartner, notes that guests will enjoy a reception with music, concession treats, and an open bar. Tickets are $100 per person and will benefit the club’s foundation that supports numerous non-profit programs.

In addition, on Friday, Nov. 22, the club will hold another fundraiser at Steinway Piano Gallery,4104 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. The affair will feature a concert by internationally acclaimed pianist touring from Italy Francesco Attesti who has been a Rotarian since 2001. Tickets at $100 per person include a reception with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. followed at 7:30 p.m. by the concert that you will not want to miss. Proceeds will benefit RCCG’s international projects.

Coordinating the affair in the absence of International Committee chair Carol Brock, is RCCG past president Yolanda Woodbridge.

By the way, Give Miami Day is coming up Nov. 21. Be sure to support your favorite charities by making donations that day.

Coral Gables Community Foundation Gala on Oct. 18, with a New York theme was another sellout at the Loew bringing in record donations for its numerous programs and initiatives.

That same weekend, on Oct. 19, yet another fabulous gala was held for A Safe Haven for Newborns at the Intercontinental Miami. This was a special year that was a reunion of the first baby saved, Gloria Hope, and the firefighters who received her. Gloria currently is attending college and took the stage to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

Laura Pastrana was there again doing a beautiful job as an emcee for the evening. During the event, CEO and founder Nick Silverio announced the number of babies they have saved from possible abandonment is up to 412. Look for more coverage on this affair soon and for the organization’s plans for a new office building as the organization outreach expands into other states and beyond our borders.

Finally, there are several dates to save for December including The Villager Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Villagers President, Kelly Schild will be my guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Also, a date to put on your calendar is Dec. 15, for the 76th Junior Orange Bowl Holiday Parade. Tickets for the grandstands are on sale at the Jr. Orange Bowl’s Eventbrite page. Jr. Orange Bowl President Michael Green will be a guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Learn more about the parade and other festival events during that interview.
