Palmer Trinity School junior Aubrey Sanko is a dancer. She performs every year in the Nutcracker ballet at the Moss Cultural Arts Center in South Miami-Dade.
“I have spent almost my whole life, or as far as I can remember, training at Miami Youth Ballet,” she says. “It really is like a second home to me, and it allows me to interact with service even more. Since about the age of six, I have been a part of the cast of dancers who perform the annual Nutcracker Production that takes place at the Moss Center which happens during the first week of December.”
They perform for more than 2,000 Miami-Dade students in three days in addition to community shows that take place the next weekend.
“Being a part of this cast – not only is it fun, but it is rewarding to continue to introduce dance as an art to thousands each year,” she says. “It is also wonderful knowing that for many families this has become an annual holiday tradition.”
This year Sanko will be the Toy Soldier, a role usually given to professional dancers.
Sanko goes to the studio almost every day. She dances not only ballet but contemporary and some jazz since she competes in dance with her studio.
“We compete in various genres of dance at both international and national competitions,” she says. “Last year I placed third in ballet and eighth contemporary for my solos at the Universal Ballet Competition.”
The team placed second at the same competition and first at Miami International Ballet Competition.
She hopes to continue dancing in college and has been investigating college dance programs and what majors or minors she’d need to take.
However, her main priority is becoming a doctor.
Last year, she volunteered with a friend who is working to bring the arts to a local nursing home.
“I was able to participate in one of the afternoon events by performing a couple of songs on the violin,” she says.
Because Palmer Trinity does not have a dance program, Sanko plays violin in the school orchestra.
She is also in the Model United Nations Club at school.
“I got the opportunity to go to Portugal last year for a conference which was very cool,” she says. “I’ve in model UN since ninth grade, I was able to do one conference in ninth grade and last year I was in two.”
She’s a member of the Secretariat, which oversees heading the committees at the Palmer Trinity Model UN conference, usually in February.
“Last year I even attended a committee in Lisbon, Portugal with the school, and it was an enlightening experience,” she says.
Sanko is the volunteer and tutoring chair for the Science National Honor Society.
“We have tutoring hours open on a weekly basis,” she says. “Twice a week, students have the opportunity to come and get help from the Science National Honor Society.”
She’s also a member of Mu Alpha Theta, Tri-M, and the Spanish National Honor Society.
This year she joined the peer counseling organization at Palmer, which focuses on supporting the wellbeing of other students, as well as spreading awareness about mental health.
For the last couple of summers, she’s gone to a summer camp and been in their leadership training program.
“It was very cool to be able to work with kids and you get to learn about general leadership,” she says.
She learned how to get people to listen to her and how to be a leader.
“It helps communicate with people at school and projects,” she says.
