‘Tis the season for parties with friends and co-workers, family gatherings, and concert performances. It’s also the time of year that many of our patients consider treating themselves with the gift of a fresher look.
One of our patients recently reached out with a question that encapsulates widely held sentiments about such cosmetic treatments using facial fillers and neurotoxins. She explained that she’d already consulted with two different doctors and received two very different recommendations regarding which products to use. She wanted to know why there’s such a variation in opinions. And, of course, she also wanted our recommendation.
So, let’s take a closer look. When it comes to facial fillers and neurotoxins, it’s not unusual to encounter varying opinions from different doctors. These differences often stem from the variety of products available, each with its unique benefits, as well as a doctor’s individual experience and your specific needs. So, let’s break it down.
Fillers: Immediate Results vs. Long-Term Effects
There are two primary types of fillers: hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and biostimulatory fillers:
- HA Fillers (e.g., Juvederm, Restylane): These are my go-to for most patients. They offer instant, predictable results and can be reversed if needed—perfect for areas like the lips, cheeks, and under the eyes. Their ability to add smoothness and hydration while maintaining flexibility is a key advantage.
- Biostimulatory Fillers (e.g., Radiesse, Sculptra): These stimulate collagen production, making them great for deeper lines or areas requiring significant volume restoration, such as the jawline or cheeks. However, they take time to show results, are not reversible, and sometimes create a puffier appearance due to unpredictable collagen growth.
Your goals, treatment area, and comfort level with the permanence of a product should guide the decision.
Neurotoxins: Botox and Beyond
As for wrinkle-smoothing products like Botox, Dysport, or Daxxify, the difference lies in how long they last and how they spread. For example, Daxxify boasts longer-lasting effects, but the choice usually comes down to the injector’s experience and preference. All of these products can deliver beautiful results when used skillfully.
The Key? A Personalized Approach
In my practice, I prioritize understanding my patients’ unique needs and selecting the products that will achieve the best results while minimizing risks. With the right injector—one who listens, evaluates carefully, and has in-depth product knowledge—you can feel confident in your choice.
When considering fillers or neurotoxins, remember: it’s not just about the product, but also the skill and experience of the doctor holding the syringe. A personalized plan is the foundation of natural, satisfying results.
