The Ron Magill Conservation Endowment, under the umbrella of the Zoo Miami Foundation, announced the winners of $5,000 scholarships to two outstanding applicants in support of their ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation.
Sabrina Lyons is enrolled in Miami Dade College’s Honors Program with a major in biology. She is a graduate of BioTech Magnet High School where she graduated Summa Cud Laude in the top 5% of her class. In addition, she was a leader for three years on Zoo Miami Foundation’s Conservation Teen Scientist Program where she donated over 780 hours of service to the zoo. She is an aspiring wildlife biologist whose goal is to “encourage people to understand how impactful conserving animals is, not just for them, but for every living creature.”
Isabel Martinez is a graduate of Florida International University with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Natural and Applied Sciences. She has been accepted into the University of Miami Master of Professional Science program with a focus on Marine Conservation. In addition to being the Volunteer Coordinator for the Zoo Miami Foundation’s various volunteer programs, she is a certified Veterinary Assistant. Her passion is rescuing and rehabilitating marine mammals and sea turtles. She is a dedicated conservationist who firmly believes that her studies “will help me achieve my rehabilitation and conservation goals as a marine biologist in the future.”
Both young ladies exemplify what the Ron Magill Conservation Scholarship was created for. Though only one scholarship is normally given annually, the selection committee could not choose between the two and therefore made the decision to award scholarships to both!
Funding for these scholarships is provided through the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment. The mission of the endowment is to provide support for in-situ conservation projects, the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, scholarships for wildlife conservation-based career paths, and programming designed to educate and inspire the public about the beauty of our natural world.
