Miami Dade County and Village of Palmetto Bay has been working for over two years to turn an FPL easement into a passive park.
The Village would become steward of the 3 acres if Miami-Dade decides to close the deal. Or, the land intended for Tanglewood Linear Park could be sold to adjacent homeowners for $14,000. At $4,700 an acre, I want a shot at this land, too.
Anyone who knows anything about real estate will tell you they aren’t making new dirt and $4,700 per acre is not the highest and best price. I have nothing against these homeowners, but the County should not be in the business of selling public land to private parties to make their property more valuable.
That leaves us with our current state of affairs in Palmetto Bay. The Village Council recently voted 3-2 to rescind a Council-approved plan to buy the land from Miami-Dade. By doing so, the new directive will pave the way for the property to be sold to private residents.
The County’s Real Estate Division is still going through its due diligence, including factoring in FPL’s concerns that they might lose access to their equipment if the land is to private hands. That means more drama.
County land should remain under the control of the general public and if there is County surplus land in a municipality, local government should have the right of first refusal.
What are your thoughts? You can have a say, too, on March 3, when the Village Manager provides an update to the Council. Mark your calendar now and get out to the meeting at the Village Hall at 9705 East Hibiscus St. and give them your 2 cents. No matter what position you take on whether to follow through on creating Tanglewood Linear Park or if homeowners next to the 3-acre site should have their way,
Let your voices be heard.
Make it your New Year’s resolution to get involved in your local government.
