Week 2 of the preseason kicked off with an exciting display of power hitting, although the pitching wasn’t quite up to par, and the defense showed some worrying signs. The long ball made a notable comeback, with offensive contributions spread across the lineup over 6.5 innings. Six pitchers took the mound, but Alex Giroux stood out with a focused 4-inning performance. The resurgence of the offense is promising as we prepare for the upcoming season, although the defense clearly requires attention.
Rob Evans, sidelined for the entire preseason, made his much-anticipated return after a one-inning appearance during Scout Day. Unfortunately for Rob, it wasn’t the comeback he envisioned. Starting tonight’s session, he faced some tough challenges right off the bat. In the first inning, he surrendered a two-run home run to Gaby Gutierrez after Mike Torres led off with a single, setting a rough tone for the game. Unfortunately, Rob didn’t learn from his earlier mistake and walked Jake Ogden at the start of the second inning. Max Galvin then followed up with a long hit to right field, bringing in two more runs. Gaby’s homer even left its mark, damaging the scoreboard. However, Rob managed to regain some composure in the third inning, finishing strong with a pair of strikeouts.
Alex Giroux displayed impressive poise on the mound during the first two innings, allowing no runs and only permitting one batter to reach first base, which occurred in the second inning. However, the third inning saw the defense falter dramatically, committing two errors that led to a pair of unearned runs. JD opted to keep Alex on the mound for an additional inning, starting with a runner on first. True to form, Alex tackled the situation with the same effectiveness he had shown earlier, quickly resolving the threat and maintaining control.
Brixton Lofgren, who pitched on Saturday, appeared less than rested and struggled during his two innings. The first inning went smoothly, but the second began to unravel. Starting with a man on first, he faced a hit batter and a couple of hits, one of which was an extra-base hit from Jake Ogden. Mixed in with a couple of passed balls and wild pitches, Brixton ended up conceding three runs. It was clearly not his best day at the office for Brixton
Jake Dorn experienced a rapid turnaround in his recent outing on Sunday. He was on the verge of completing his rotation without allowing a run, but that changed with one critical moment. Renzo Gonzalez stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single, scoring a run and ending Dorn’s day on a down note.
Ryan Ashford has been bouncing back and forth all season, put in a good performance tonight not letting a run score and walking away with BL having Max Galvin ground out 3-1 to complete his rotation for the night.
JD possibly switching direction regarding the candidate for Closer. After Jackson Cleveland not having a shutdown, close-out performance in previous games, JD turned to Michael Fernandez, a LH freshman to see if he had what it takes to shut the door. Tonight, like Sunday, he did exactly that. Not exactly Andrew Walters, but with seasoning who knows how far he will go. Tonight three up/three down with one K.
Offensively, the bats are beginning to get into rhythm. First time this preseason in double digits with 12 hits pounded out: two for HRs(Gaby Gutierrez,Max Galvin) and one extra-base hit: Jake Ogden(double). One player with multiple hits: Tanner Smith 2-3.
Our Achilles Heel has shifted from the throwing arms of our catchers to the fielding of the position players. Sloppiness in the field seems to be heading in the same path as last year where we were 3rd worse in the ACC; only having Clemson and Louisville worse. Errors are game-changers and we can’t afford to give away runs when our hitting goes in and out of its dormant stages. Middle-relief pitching is another concern. Last year the bats just couldn’t keep up with the number of runs pitching gave up and defense gave away. Still have a couple of weeks to work on this with our first true test will be week 3 against Florida.
Three more games on the schedule in week two with Friday’s scrimmage scheduled for 345PM.
