Cutler Bay to host inaugural Poetry Reading, Open MicThe Town of Cutler Bay will host something new and different for active adults on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Franjo Park, 20175 Franjo Rd. The event begins at 11 a.m.
Paola Perez, Events and Programs Specialist of the Parks and Recreation Department, said she is looking forward to the unique event.

“This will be the first time the Town of Cutler Bay Active Adults Program will be hosting a Poetry Reading and Open Mic activity,” Perez said. “This event is free, and we currently have space for 22 more people to sign-up and join. The room capacity is 30.”

In what staff members predict will be a fun even, the Open Mic and Poetry Reading will feature poet Janay Blakely, author of Pages on the Floor, which is described as a strikingly honest depiction of what it is like to be a young African American woman in today’s society.

It’s written in a conversational tone, and with a voice that is at times confessional, sarcastic, or even funny. The relatable poems touch on topics such as race, family, love, self-discovery and heartbreak.

Those attending are also invited to read an excerpt of their favorite poem during the Open Mic portion or even share their own writings with the group.

To register for the event, call Paola Perez at 786-205-5427 or send email to her at pperez@cutlerbay-fl.gov.
