Wednesday, February 19, the County Commission discussed, the future of the county’s Waste-to-Energy plant. After lengthy discussion on Chairman Rodriguez’s proposal to expand site options to include the private sector, and after considering the administration’s recommendation, the decision on a future location was postponed for 120 days.
A large number of Doral residents, along with local elected officials, attended the meeting to express their concerns and opposition to the potential construction of the incinerator within the City of Doral. Mayor Christi Fraga, whose advocacy for this issue has been crucial in this fight, joined the Doral delegation once again, accompanied by Councilmembers Rafael Pineyro, Nicole Reinoso, and others.
However, unlike previous postponements, yesterday’s approval opened the door for potential private partnerships and new technologies, expanding the available alternatives. Mayor Fraga expressed her support for this action: “I welcome this initiative to include key stakeholders from the community, including the private sector, in finding solutions for the county’s Waste-to-Energy plant. This proposal should have been considered from the start, and I have consistently emphasized the importance of greater community involvement in this decision.”
Additionally, Mayor Fraga reaffirmed her commitment to continue fighting, alongside her colleagues and residents, to prevent the Waste-to-Energy facility from returning to Doral. She emphasized that the city will continue providing logistical and transportation support to ensure residents can attend future county meetings, making sure the community’s voice is heard. She also assured that the city will keep the community informed and up to date on any developments, encouraging residents to stay engaged and involved in this critical issue.
The final decision on the incinerator’s location will not be made until June. In light of this, Mayor Fraga urged Doral residents to stay informed and attentive to this critical issue for the city.
