MIAMI SUFFERS FIRST SEASON LOSS TO FAU OWLS, 2-1.

FAU: GAME 1

Miami faced a significant setback against the FAU Owls on the road. After dominating a weaker Niagara team over the weekend with impressive double-digit runs and hits in all three games, tonight’s performance was utterly disappointing. The team managed only one run, which came from a hit batter, and finished with just four hits, all contributed by two players. While it’s still early in the season, this lackluster display highlights serious challenges ahead and raises undeniable concerns about the potential for a long, frustrating season.

A last-minute adjustment had Reese Lumpkin stepping in as the starter, and by the end of the evening, seven pitchers had taken the mound. It was a fiercely competitive pitcher’s duel until the 7th inning, when Will Smith faltered, and Michael Fernandez failed to step up, resulting in a walk that allowed the go-ahead run to score.

The bats were silent tonight, recording only four scattered hits. Except for the 1st inning, they posed no threat to increase their initial run, which was scored when Bobby March was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The scoring opportunity arose when Jake Ogden led off, reaching first on an error by the right fielder, E9, which allowed him to advance to second. An early chance to dominate the Owls slipped away as Dorian and Daniel struck out. However, Max Galvin kept the inning alive with a single, putting runners on the corners. A series of back-to-back hit batters resulted in the Canes’ only run, but they were unable to generate any additional offense for the rest of the game.

Miami’s pitching dominated the first six innings, systematically eliminating threats. The Owls found themselves in scoring position repeatedly in those same innings but failed to seize their opportunities. However, Miami’s luck dissipated in the seventh inning. Michael Fernandez, the Canes’ fifth pitcher, began the inning with a double down the left-field line. Following that, two walks loaded the bases with one out. JD remained with Fernandez, who let the count run to 3-1 before conceding a walk that brought in the tying run. A pitching change introduced Jackson Cleveland, who quickly fell behind 3-0 but managed to strike out the next batter. Unfortunately, the moment of relief was brief as Cleveland once again found himself at 3-0, walking in the go-ahead and winning run.

The Miami offense was completely unacceptable tonight. Batting just .129 as a team underscores their inconsistency compared to the strong performance against Niagara, where they truly put the “pedal to the metal” offensively. While FAU may not be on par with the Purple Eagles, tonight’s performance was far from competitive, and the expectations are for a better display than last year. With only four hits total, two from Jake Ogden and two from Max Galvin, the rest of the lineup produced nothing. Daniel Cuvet returned to the lineup but added only three strikeouts to the four he had previously. It might be wise to move him lower in the batting order to alleviate some pressure, as he is on track for another season high in strikeouts. Although it’s still early in the season, shuffling the lineup could be essential with Princeton coming in for a four-game series this weekend. If the team looked this poor against FAU, I’m genuinely concerned about their prospects facing the Gators next week. That series could very well determine the course of this young team’s season.

It’s early in the season, but the team is firmly on the clock to turn things around. We absolutely cannot afford to lose mid-week games like we did last year; otherwise, we’ll once again find ourselves looking in from the outside when the post-season arrives. Over the next few days, it’s back to the batting cages to reclaim the form we had against Niagara. The Princeton series is a must-win sweep—anything less is simply unacceptable. First pitch is set for Friday at 7:00PM
