On February 19, 2025, School Board Member Mary Blanco, District 7, hosted an engaging and insightful Town Hall Meeting titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Our Schools” at Miami Killian Senior High School. The event brought together educators, students, and community members for an in-depth discussion on the expanding role of AI in today’s educational world.
The town hall featured Daniel Mateo, Assistant Superintendent, Office of Innovation & School Choice, as the guest speaker. Mr. Mateo delivered a captivating presentation on the transformative potential of AI-driven innovations in education. While showcasing the exciting technological advancements, Mr. Mateo also underscored the need for careful consideration of AI’s risks and the importance of its responsible use.
“Artificial intelligence is reshaping the educational landscape at a rapid pace. It is vital that we engage in these discussions to ensure our students and educators are fully prepared for the changes ahead,” said Board Member Mary Blanco. “I am deeply grateful to everyone who participated in this important conversation.”
In addition to the AI-focused discussion, the evening included a heartfelt awards ceremony honoring exceptional District 7 students. Two students from each school were recognized. Among the awardees, Adrian Moran of Norma Butler Bossard Elementary School received a special Academic Achievement award for becoming the 1 millionth participant in the READ with Malcolm initiative. Leah Ruiz of Calusa Elementary School was also honored with the Virtue of Kindness award for her selfless generosity and acts of kindness towards her peers and the broader community.
This successful event further demonstrates Board Member Blanco’s commitment to fostering meaningful, forward-thinking conversations that contribute to a safe and student-centered educational environment.
