The Village of Palmetto Bay’s planned new park honoring veterans is nearing completion of the first phase.

The park, to be located at SW 164th Street and 93rd Avenue, is close to the village’s American Legion Post 133 at 16401 SW 90 Ave., named in honor of Marlin Moore, a local soldier killed in World War II.

The park will be situated on land acquired from South Motors on June 17, 2024. On June 18 of that year U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar presented Mayor Karyn Cunningham with an appropriation check for $200,000 to support construction of Phase 1 of the park.

The park is an important addition to the village according to Mayor Cunningham.

“Veterans Park in Palmetto Bay stands as a tribute to courage, sacrifice and the enduring spirit of those who served,” Mayor Cunningham said in comments on Feb. 19. “With the council’s recent approval of funding for a Gold Star Monument, the community reaffirms its commitment to honoring the families of fallen heroes. We are now heading out to RFP for the build-out of the first phase, bringing this vision one step closer to reality.”

Construction drawings are complete for all three phases of the project. Phase 1 of the park will contain a rubberized walking path, picnic tables, benches, tables and chairs, parking spaces and landscaping. The most important feature will be the Gold Star Family Memorial, which honors the families of those who died while protecting America’s freedom. The Village of Palmetto Bay is working with the Woody Williams Foundation, the creator of the Gold Star Family Memorial, to create a monument that represents Palmetto Bay’s admiration and respect for the families of the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation.

“This park has special significance to me,” Mayor Cunningham said, speaking in 2024.

“Both my father and stepfather served in the Marines and Navy, respectively, and there are more than 700 veterans living in the village. This will be a place of reflection and education, and in my opinion, inspire generations for years to come.”
