Books for a Brighter Future: RAMBAM Day School Students Give Back with Achieve Miami

On February 23, youth from the Temple Beth Am community, including elementary students from the Temple’s RAMBAM Day School, came together to support their peers in need through the power of literacy. As part of the temple’s annual Mitzvah Day, an event dedicated to community-wide social action, students assembled bags filled with books for underserved children across Miami-Dade.

The project directly benefits families whose children participate in Achieve Miami, a local nonprofit committed to bridging educational gaps through literacy programs, mentorship, teacher training, and college /career access initiatives. Many of these families are developing a love for learning but lack access to books at home—this initiative helped fill that gap.

Thanks to the immense generosity of the Books & Books Literary Foundation, which donated more than 400 books, along with the students’ own contributions from their personal home libraries, hundreds of children will now have books to call their own.

“Our students weren’t just giving books—they were sharing their favorite stories, the ones that sparked their own excitement for reading,” said Nessia Kushner, the Mitzvah Day Captain for this project. The compassion and generosity these young volunteers showed will not only provide access to books but will also help to spark a lifelong love of learning.”

Temple Beth Am’s Mitzvah Day brings together nearly 1,000 members annually to create positive change across Miami-Dade through various service projects, both on-site at the temple in Pinecrest and throughout the community. With leadership from Temple Beth Am also involved in Achieve Miami, this collaboration was a natural fit to strengthen local educational equity. Second grade students at the Temple’s school, RAMBAM, are collaborating with Achieve Miami throughout the year as part of their curriculum to learn about and contribute to the important work Achieve Miami leads in Miami.

Youth are learning that a love for reading can be contagious—and that when children share books they love, they can help create new readers. Through their kindness, they are not just giving books; they are opening doors to imagination, adventure, and learning for children just like them.
