The captivating Golden Gates/Moscow Nights musical troupe from St. Petersburg, Russia will present a magical family show featuring Russian songs, lilting balalaika and accordion instrumentals, folk stories, dances, and comedy routines on Thursday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m., at First United Methodist Church of South Miami.
Wearing colorful traditional costumes, the performers will thrill the audience with their musical virtuosity and soaring gymnastic footwork. The performance is free, but donations to support Russian children will be accepted.
Audience participation is part of the show, so this may be your chance to see a balalaika up close, and get some pointers on those fantastic leaps performed in Russian dance. Don’t know what trashotky is? You’ll find out!
Golden Gates performers (ages 10-18) are drawn from students at St. Petersburg’s Author’s Aesthetic Music Secondary School, and are led by Vitaliy Bezrodnov. See more of the troupe at www.RussianFolk.com.
The church is located at 6565 Red Rd. in Coral Gables, 33143 (on the corner of Red Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard). The acoustically perfect sanctuary seats 600 so bring all your friends and family.
