Welcome to Read2Succeed’s new education column

Read2Succeed is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that has been serving thousands of at risk youth and families since 2007. Its main focus is to educate children and empower parents via its after-school tutoring and FCAT preparation programs and its adult English classes, empowerment workshops and social services. The column will have important education news, tips for parents on how to actively engage in their child’s education and resources for teachers to name a few items. In this month’s column we focus on going back to school.

The lazy days of summer are quickly winding down and before you know it, you and your child both will be getting into the groove of doing homework, getting use to new routines and experiencing new challenges.

Going back to school can be a stressful time for the whole family. There is no escaping the first day of school craziness.

After a summer of long nights and sleeping in, there is no getting around the rude awakening of the dreaded alarm clock and the beginning of starting new morning routines.

On the first morning of school it is normal for your child to be full of questions and it is perfectly normal for them to feel anxious and nervous no matter their age.

After getting over the first day jitters and following the tips below, this should make life for both student and parent a little bit smoother.

1. Lay out clothes the night before and make sure all necessary homework and paperwork is in your child’s book bag.

2. Start the day off right by setting a specific bedtime and stick to it to ensure your child gets enough sleep.

3. Establish a morning routine and check list for yourself and for your child. (Ex: get dressed, make your bed, eat breakfast, brush your teeth, get your backpack)

4. Decide where and at what time homework will be done.

5. Make homework time and school projects easier to complete by having extra school supplies on hand.

6. Start each day with a smile and a positive statement.

With a little planning ahead you can make going back to school simple and stress-free. Good luck, have a great school year and make sure to always squeeze in reading time with your child.

A good way to spend quality family time and reading time with your child is to join me and Read2Succeed every second Friday at Barnes and Noble in West Kendall at 7pm for “It’s Story Time!” Be sure to dress your child in his or her pajamas. Milk and cookies are served after reading. Hope to see you there!
