In a heartwarming display of community spirit, ART (Accessories Resource Team) on May 22 helped transform living spaces at Camillus House near Downtown Miami with a dramatic, visually stunning makeover.
Like a scene from a home renovation show, ART’s network of home décor professionals arrived with buses full of donations — unloading, building, and styling new furnishings for residents who have experienced homelessness. The event culminated in emotional “reveal” moments as spaces were transformed from institutional to warm and dignified.
Volunteers created an assembly line of activity — some carrying furniture, others sorting items, and design teams styling rooms with professional expertise. Spaces became fully furnished bedrooms complete with new nightstands, lamps, and most importantly, plush mattresses — a profound gift for residents who dreamed of sleeping in a comfortable bed while spending nights on sidewalks, park benches or cardboard.
Volunteers carefully made beds with crisp, fresh sheets and fluffy pillows. Each mattress representing not just comfort, but a foundation for healing and stability. The transformation continued with carefully selected artwork and personal touches that brought warmth to formerly institutional spaces.
The makeover extended to common areas with inviting sofas, accent chairs, and coffee tables where residents can rebuild community connections.
For more than 60 years, Camillus House has provided food, shelter, services and hope to Miami’s homeless. Camillus House programs include mental health and addiction treatment, recovery services for survivors of human trafficking, job training and placement, and transitional and permanent supportive housing.
Today, Camillus House provides safe housing to more than 1,600 women, men, and children across 10 facilities throughout Miami-Dade County, and even offers a kennel for clients with pets, because no one should have to choose between shelter and a beloved companion.
