Amazon and Health in the Hood distribute produce in Overtown
Volunteers from Amazon worked side by side with Health in the Hood to sort, package and distribute thousands of pounds of fresh produce and essentials.

Health in the Hood and Amazon came together recently for a powerful day of community care and impact in the heart of Overtown.

More than 200 women and children experiencing homelessness and food insecurity received free bundles of fresh produce, pantry staples, and wellness resources at a special distribution event held at 1453 NW Second Ave., a local women’s shelter in Miami.

The initiative, made possible through Amazon’s continued sponsorship and hands-on support, served as both a day of nourishment and a statement of hope. For families navigating economic hardship, the event delivered not only healthy groceries but a sense of dignity, compassion, and community connection.

“This wasn’t just about distributing food — it was about delivering a message that these families are seen, valued, and supported,” said Asha Walker, founder and CEO of Health in the Hood. “Thanks to Amazon’s unwavering partnership, we were able to turn an ordinary Saturday into a life-affirming experience for women and children who deserve so much more.”

Throughout the day, volunteers from Amazon’s local, regional, and warehouse teams worked side by side with Health in the Hood to sort, package, and distribute thousands of pounds of fresh produce and essentials. Attendees also received health education materials and were encouraged to connect with other wellness services supported by Health in the Hood throughout the year.

“This partnership is about more than one event,” said Angelica Santibañez, head of Community Engagement for Florida at Amazon. “It’s about building sustainable solutions to food insecurity. We’re proud to support Health in the Hood in their mission to make nutritious food accessible, especially to women-led households and children who are often most vulnerable.”

The June 14 event was part of a broader, year-round collaboration between Amazon and Health in the Hood, which now includes monthly logistics support, food donation routes, and volunteer engagement. These efforts directly address the urgent need in Miami-Dade County, where more than 370,000 residents — over half of them children — face food insecurity.

In 2025, Health in the Hood continues to expand its reach with the support of partners like Amazon. The organization currently distributes thousands of pounds of fresh produce each month and offers holistic programming like gardening education, cooking classes, and wellness workshops — working toward a future where every family in Miami has access to fresh, affordable, and nourishing food.

As Walker put it, “Health starts in the neighborhood — and thanks to partners like Amazon, we are seeing entire communities shift toward health, dignity, and lasting change.”
