In a powerful display of community commitment and love for the arts, Miami String Haus, a family-run institution known worldwide for expert instrument repairs and rentals, donated more than $100,000 in string instruments and gear to Horace Mann Middle School, a Title I public school in Miami-Dade County. The donation was made possible through the support of a like-minded partner in the string instrument community.
The donation equips the school’s music program with a full range of high-quality violins, violas, cellos, bows, and durable cases — plus a rare and invaluable addition: several double basses, large and costly instruments that most public schools can’t afford. These new additions will give both beginner and intermediate students access to professional-grade instruments they would otherwise never be able to experience.
“Every child deserves access to quality music education,” said Charles Winters, co-founder of Miami String Haus and Councilman for the Village of El Portal. “Music is transformative — it teaches discipline, fosters creativity, and opens doors to the future. These students are part of our community and they deserve the best we can offer.”
This donation is part of an ongoing commitment by the Winters family, who regularly lead free music workshops and school visits across South Florida. Their work supports organizations like Miami Music Project, Greater Miami Youth Symphony, Florida International University, and University of Miami, offering hands-on instruction in instrument care and music appreciation.
For Charles Winters, this work is deeply personal:
“Music is a seed,” he said. “If you plant it in the right place, the whole community will grow.”
