Sofia Reed Gomes, a graduating high school senior at Palmer Trinity School, has been awarded the prestigious $2,500 PEO STAR Scholarship for the 2024–25 academic year.
Reed Gomes is one of only 880 students selected nationwide to receive this honor from the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood, a nonprofit volunteer women’s organization dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for women. The PEO STAR Scholarship, established in 2009, recognizes outstanding high school senior women who plan to pursue postsecondary education at accredited institutions in the U.S. or Canada.
“Sofia exemplifies leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, and community service excellence. She has shown exceptional promise for future success and was named co-valedictorian of Palmer Trinity School’s Class of 2025, among other notable honors,” said Patrick Roberts, head of school.
This fall, Reed Gomes will attend the University of Chicago, where she plans to study computer science and economics. A passionate advocate for helping others find their voice, Reed Gomes has dedicated time to volunteering with Breakthrough Miami, where she taught public speaking skills to under-resourced students. She aims to empower others through confident communication, creativity and collaboration.
In addition to her leadership in public speaking, Reed Gomes combines her interests in technology and the arts. As an intern at the University of Miami, she developed a widely used performing arts website and shares her musical talents as a saxophonist in several bands, often performing in the community.
She was nominated for this scholarship by Chapter A of Miami, Florida.
The PEO Sisterhood, founded on Jan. 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, IA, has nearly a quarter of a million members in approximately 6,000 chapters across the United States and Canada.
