Celebrating Community: September’s highlights, October’s promise

Fall in South Florida always is a season to savor, with football and fundraisers giving us plenty of reasons to gather, celebrate, and give back. This year is no exception, with September setting the tone for an exciting season ahead.

The month opened on Sept. 5 with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami’s Tropical Extravaganza Benefit Dinner at the Rusty Pelican on Virginia Key, launching the inaugural Miriam’s Mentees Mentorship Program. Co-chaired by Norma Jean Abraham, Jill Daley, and Sharon McIvor, the evening raised nearly $73,000 and brought tropical flair to philanthropy. Guests enjoyed live entertainment by saxophonist Jorge Perez and singer Steve Fatal, dancing even before dinner, and a spirited raffle drawing.

Among those attending were BBBS COO Rebekah Lanae Lengel; director Gale Nelson; the Hon. Bronwyn Miller, Migna Sanchez-Llorens, and Norma Lindsey; Carol Suroweic; Meme Ferre; Isabel Cancela; Miriam Almer; Shirlee Fernandez; Kathleen Monahan; Raquel Watters, and Rita Fernandez.

The next evening, on Sept. 6, the Coral Gables Bar Association hosted its sold-out Installation Gala at the Loews Hotel, attracting prominent attorneys, judges, and civic leaders from across South Florida. After a lively reception with music, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres, guests enjoyed dinner, dancing, and the official swearing-in of officers.

Florida Supreme Court Justice John D. Couriel presided over the ceremony, offering thoughtful remarks before installing the 2025–26 officers: president Daniel C. Fors; president-elect Elina Magaly Santana; treasurer Vanessa Michaud, and Secretary Ian Illych-Martinez.

These memorable September events remind us of the vibrancy and generosity that define our community — and they are just the beginning. October promises to bring even more gatherings that blend celebration with service.

In fact, October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. With that in mind, The Women Voice Network, a non-profit that economically empowers women who are victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, is planning a fundraiser at the Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) at City Place on Oct. 18, 2-5 p.m., that promises to be a great fun. Guests will enjoy door prizes, drinks, appetizers, a silent auction, live entertainment and more.

The new GFWC Doral West Dade Woman’s Club (DWDWC) is partnering with WVN in support of the efforts. Thanks to DORCAM’s Marcelo Llobel and WVN founder and DWDWC founding member Iris Garcia for heir efforts in coordinating this event. Prepurchased tickets are $75 per person and $85 at door.
