Shortly after Cory Mars was born, he was taken to Miami Children’s Hospital for an emergency angioplasty to clear a blocked pulmonary valve in his heart. He continues to receive yearly check-ups. Now 13, Cory wanted to give back to the hospital that helped him become a healthy young man.
As part of his Bar Mitzvah, a Jewish rite of passage from boyhood to becoming a productive member of society, Cory held a “Party for a Purpose” to raise money for the Miami Children’s Hospital Congenital Heart Institute. His goal was to raise enough money to replace a broken TV in the Cardiac lobby. Thanks to the amazing support of Cory’s family and friends, he raised more than $2,000 and was able to purchase not one, but two TVs for Miami Children’s Hospital.
Cory and his proud parents Alison and Rick recently visited the Cardiac team to see the difference he made.
“I walked in this morning and was amazed at the difference the TVs make to our lobby,” said Dr. Redmond Burke, Director of Cardiovascular Surgery. “Cory, I want you to consider that your donation will allow thousands of children a year to watch TV and that will help ease their spirits before stepping in for their cardiac visit.”
Cory’s proud mother Alison added, “Miami Children’s Hospital is in Cory’s heart and remains in ours.”
