Village program offering pet adoption assistanceThe Village of Palmetto Bay has a new program aimed to assist residents who are interested in adopting a pet. The Adopt-A-Pet program will reimburse residents of the village for the cost of adopting a pet from Miami-Dade County Animal Services.

Reimbursements will cover the adoption fees charged by Miami-Dade County Animal Services and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of $10,000 has been allocated to the program, which will remain open until all funds are exhausted.

“In Palmetto Bay, we recognize that pets enrich the lives of our residents,” said staff in a message posted online. “As such, the village council has allocated funding to assist with the costs relative to the adoption of a pet from Miami-Dade County Animal Services.”

The program was approved through the adoption of Resolution No. 2025-42 on July 7, sponsored by Councilmember Marsha Matson and co-sponsored by Vice Mayor Mark Merwitzer.

Benefits of the program:

The Adopt-A-Pet program will reimburse residents of the Village of Palmetto Bay the cost of adopting a pet from Miami-Dade County Animal Services. As stated in Resolution No. 2025-42, reimbursable adoption fees are as follows:
● Puppies under four (4) months old: $85
● Dogs four (4) months and older: $65 (includes required tag fee of $30)
● Cats and kittens: $35

To find adoption sites and eligible offsite partner locations, visit the Miami-Dade County Animal Services website.

Guidelines:

To receive a reimbursement as explained before, complete the online application at www.palmettobay-fl.gov/FormCenter/Applications-14/AdoptAPet-Program-Application-75.

Residents will be required to upload the following documents:

● Valid driver’s license or government-issued ID (also serves as proof of residency if it shows your Palmetto Bay address).

● Proof of residency (examples include your driver’s license, a utility bill, warranty deed, lease agreement or other document showing your name and your Palmetto Bay address).

● Receipt or other proof of payment to Miami-Dade County Animal Services for the adoption of your pet. Note that only adoption fees from Miami-Dade County Animal Services are reimbursable under this program. In other words, you must adopt your pet from Miami-Dade County Animal Services. Only receipts dated after July 7 will be accepted.

Reimbursements will be processed once a 30-day post adoption period has been satisfied.

This waiting period coincides with the Miami-Dade County Animal Services 30-day pet return policy, which allows for the return of adopted pets within 30 days from the adoption date with a full refund of the pet adoption fee.

Eligibility:

To receive the one-time reimbursement assistance, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

● Be a current resident of the Village of Palmetto Bay.

● Adopt your pet at a Miami-Dade County Animal Services facility, including offsite partner locations and adoption events.

Applications and support documents will be reviewed by staff upon submission. Once the documentation has been approved and the waiting period has been satisfied, a reimbursement check will be mailed to the address provided on the online application.
