Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus renaissance of the arts peaks this Fall season with the unveiling of Classic Movement, a sculpture in the likeness of Michelangelo’s emblematic David. Created by renowned Spanish artist Eladio de Mora (known as dEmo) and dressed by the famous fashion house Missoni. Unveiled in November, it will remain at the Campus until April 30, 2013.
The David’s visit to Miami will mark the first time ever being exhibited on a college campus, having graced a prominent New York street this Summer, and it will travel to the cities of Chicago and Paris thereafter. The approximately 17- foot-tall sculpture has the same dimensions as Michelangelo’s original and is made of fiberglass, steel, polyester and resins. The project came to life in 2010, when the piece was created for Vogue Fashion Night Out (VFNO) in Madrid. Recent installations at Miami International Sculpture Park include Niños, a sculpture by dEmo and Libertad, a large scale painting by Venezuela painter Jorge Dager. Libertad and Ninos are symbolic works, representing Articles 1 and 2, respectively, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Miami International Sculpture Park was inaugurated with world-renowned art donations. Open to the community, it is one of the largest parks of its kind in the state of Florida. Currently, 69 permanent works are on exhibit.
