The 28,250-square-foot project delivers modern classrooms, resident spaces and wellness rooms to support the largest Graduate Medical Education (GME) program in South Florida
Skanska, a leading construction firm, has completed the $10.8 million renovation of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) facility at Broward Health Medical Center. Spanning 28,250 square feet, the project transformed a hospital space on the first floor previously occupied by radiology offices into a modern hub designed to house the largest GME program in South Florida that will educate, train and support the region’s physician workforce.
Over the course of 14 months, Skanska served as general contractor for the healthcare construction project leading a renovation that included the full interior demolition and rebuild of the first-floor space. The work encompassed the relocation and reconfiguration of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, along with the addition of new infrastructure to support the program’s advanced needs.
The renovated facility now features administrative offices, classrooms, a conference room, resident lounges, on-call rooms with private, individual bathrooms, as well as a wellness room and library. To support the comprehensive renovation of these spaces that will now focus on medical education, the project included the installation of three new air handling units (AHUs), upgraded electrical panels, structural steel reinforcements, and a comprehensive access control and security system.
“We are proud to deliver this modern facility for Broward Health, one that directly supports the training and wellness of medical residents,” said Frank Longo, Vice President and Account Manager at Skanska. “By creating an advanced and supportive environment, we’re helping ensure the next generation of physicians is equipped to thrive as they care for the South Florida community.”

The project was completed in full compliance with ADA standards and Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) requirements. With this renovation, Broward Health strengthens its capacity to provide exceptional graduate medical education opportunities, advancing both the healthcare workforce and quality of care in the region.
“This project reflects Broward Health’s commitment to training the next generation of physicians right here in South Florida,” said David Clark, senior vice president of operations at Broward Health. “In partnership with Skanska, we’ve transformed this space into a state-of-the-art environment that supports education, collaboration and resident well-being.”
An industry leader in healthcare construction, Skanska is currently leading nearly $1 billion worth of hospital construction work across Florida with three major health systems in fast-growing markets such as Miami, Fort Myers and Lakeland.
