On the heels of community-wide events to celebrate Israel’s 65th birthday and a predecessor to celebration of the festive Shavuot holiday, is another highly anticipated event; Kesher will be hosting its 17th Annual Scholarship Journal Dinner on May 9, 2013 at Beth Torah in North Miami Beach. The evening will raise scholarship dollars for the independent, non-profit school serving Jewish children with learning disabilities and other developmental delays.
“We are a community school so it is fitting that our dinner will be an extension of all the important and celebratory happenings in South Florida,” noted Rabbi Ezra Levy, executive director of Kesher. “The Kesher Scholarship Dinner is about coming together to marshal the philanthropic support needed to help build the future of our Jewish community, one student at a time.”
To help Kesher achieve its fundraising goal, the Chai Society — comprised of donors who contribute $1,800 or more on an annual basis—has chosen this year to honor Rabbi Ed and Laurie Farber and Michael and Barbara Russ, owners of CopyMasters Inc., and a high-profile couple with roots planted in North Miami. The Farbers have dedicated their lives and careers to Jewish education and the Jewish community. Rabbi Farber currently serves as Rabbi of Beth Torah, a prominent synagogue in the area.
Founded in 1995 when local day school administrators, teachers, psychologists and parents recognized the need for a Jewish special education program, today, Kesher is the largest program of its kind in the US. Fully accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and AISF (Association of Independent Schools in Florida), Kesher offers premier special education from first grade through high school. Because it is housed on the Hillel Community Day School campus, students are afforded the ability to interact with their age appropriate peers on a daily basis. Kesher students learn in self contained classrooms and, where appropriate, are mainstreamed into traditional day school classes and campus life.
The strictly Kosher event is open to the public and couvert is $125 per person. For more information, call 305.792.7060 or email kesherld@bellsouth.net.
