Coral Gables, FL…May 16, 2013…On Sunday, May 5, 2013 music students from Miami-Dade and Broward counties performed at the Florida State Music Teachers Association District VI Student Day Honors Recitalheld at the Coral Gables Museum. The performers were selected after an intensive evaluation held at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center of Florida International University the previous week. Nearly 100 students were tested in three main areas — performance, written and aural theory. Levels of difficulty ranged from Primary through college preparatory Level 12.

Awards for the best early Sight Readers were presented to Priscilla Gomes, Grade 3 and Cindy Wang, Grade 5. Aural Theory awards went to Alexa Garcia and Jacob Mason. Jacob Mason also received the highest scores in piano performance. He performed Ballade Op. 23 No. 1 by Frederic Chopin.

Florida State Music Teachers Association is an organization whose members are professionally engaged in the teaching of music in the State of Florida. The primary purpose of the Association is the advancement of music in the State of Florida through excellent teaching, learning, and performing which seeks to recognize individual achievement at all levels. Specifically, the Association strives to raise and maintain the standards of music teaching; stimulate public interest in music; encourage the study of music; and protect its members in all matters pertaining to the profession.
