Gables Bike Day launch party was held on Oct. 1 at Tarpon Bend. The affair served as a fundraiser with some terrific silent auction items and drew a nice crowd of supporters.
Scheduled for Oct. 20, Gables Bike Day is a free event presented by Miracle Mile and Downtown Coral Gables. Activities will include hourly bike tours with guide riders; live music from two local bands, Nil Lara and Oriente; farmer’s type market; antique bike show, and more. This privately funded event is organized by Bike Walk Coral Gables, a nonprofit group that promotes cycling and walking in the city.

Among the many enjoying the evening were John and Deborah Swain, Don Slesnick, Yolanda Woodbridge, Nicolas and Jodi Cabrera, Charles Sachs, Michael McMahon and Carolina Rendeiro.
During an annual fundraiser, “An Evening in the Garden,” Citizens for a Better South Florida (Citizens) treated guests to picture perfect night at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, the perfect backdrop to this affair attended by more than 100 guests who enjoyed a delicious dinner provided by Catering by Lovables.
The evening’s program included a brief video highlighting the organization’s programs, all providing environmental education to underserved communities throughout the county. Executive director Gloria Antia presented an award to Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez recognizing him for his longtime generosity and support to Citizens. Also honored was the Batchelor Foundation for its recent support for Citizens Community Science Workshop at the Leadership Learning Center in East Little Havana. Proceeds from this fundraiser helps provide funding for organization’s many programs.
Sponsors included Florida Power and Light, Milian Swain & Associates, Enterprise Rent a-Car, the Guerra Foundation, and Nova Consulting, as well as a number of other local businesses and friends of Citizens.
Coral Gables Rotarians, Coral Gables Woman’s Club and even the Westin Colonnade are designing entries for the Great Grove Bed Race to be held on Nov. 3. In addition, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables will have a float sponsored by Shell Lumber. Jesus Guzman, Shell Lumber president, recently was welcomed as a new member of the Gables Rotary Club.
Speaking of Rotary, several Gables Rotarians were spotted at Matheson Hammock Park for the Coastal Clean Day. They waded through water and even used kayaks to gather as much debris as they could before calling it a day and taking a well deserved rest at Scottie’s Landing.
Mireya Kilmon, the president of GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club recently was honored at the Hispanic Heritage Festival’s Noche de Honor event winning under the philanthropy category. The annual fashion show and awards ceremony took place at the International Mall and was followed by an after party and silent auction with proceeds benefiting the Bella Foundation and the Simon Youth Foundation.
Finally, congratulations to Lauren Chiara on being crowned Member of the Month for the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. Lauren is one of several very active and dynamite new members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club and is soon to be a new mother. This club, that owns and operates a free children’s dental clinic, meets the first and third Wednesday of every month in the evening. Women interested in serving the community are welcome.
