Coral Gables was well represented in this year’s Great Grove Bed race with teams from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club and the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, sponsored by Miami’s Community Newspapers and Shell Lumber and Hardware, respectively.
As virgin racers, these two clubs faired very well in the race. Newly inducted Coral Gables Rotarian Jesus Guzman, Shell Lumber’s president, called on his people to build a fast bed for Rotary’s entry while the CGWC’s bed was constructed by Ralph Rivera to resemble a crap table promoting the club’s Casino Night which benefits the club’s children free dental clinic. Ralph, husband of Dr. Iris Torres Rivera, the club’s dental clinic director, even took over racing in the final heat.
Shell was instrumental in helping both entries with a location from which to finish beds and with racers. They even loaned out crew backups to help out the CGWC and Barracuda entries.
For all, it was a great day of fun with perfectly beautiful weather. Thousands were on hand to enjoy outdoor fun with great food, drinks, vendor booths, celebrity grand marshal Flo Rida, performances by FIU cheerleaders and so much more.
While Sapient’s team won the race and a group of bearded men won Crowd Favorite (an award Barracuda won last year), both Coral Gables Rotary/Shell Lumber and Coral Gables Woman’s Club plan on returning with improved beds for next year.
