The performing arts are alive and well at Miami Christian School whose choir and band provided friends and family with two concerts during December to celebrate the Christmas season.

Under the direction of Derek Shute, the concert and jazz bands as well as a guitar ensemble entertained a packed house with a diverse program celebrating the season and showcasing their talents.

At a choir concert the following week, MCS vocal students from all sections of the school under the direction of Gisselle Pedraza sang holiday numbers amid a festively decorated room.

In conjunction with the band concert, MCS seniors orchestrated a fund-raising dinner for this year’s Senior Trip while MCS Juniors provided gift wrapping expertise to raise money for their Senior Trip the following year.

On the academic front, Virgilio Gonzalez, one of the famed “Watergate Burglars” involved in the Democratic National Headquarters’ break-in during the Nixon administration, visited MCS as a guest speaker for Mr. Williams’ Honors U.S. History Class. Gonzalez shared his insights and role as the locksmith in the operation and took questions from the class — one of many ways Williams brings history to life in his class.

Miami Christian School participated in the Computer Science Education Week in December, joining millions of students across the nation who did an hour of coding (computer programming) on the CSED website. Students from six to 18 learned to program games and helped CSED reach 1 billion lines of code in a week’s time.

The annual Scholastic Book Fair in December provided students a chance to purchase books and other items while raising money for the library. This “Reading Oasis” was a great success thanks to the volunteers who helped out during the weeklong event.
