R. Mack Harrell, MD, FACP, FACE, ECNU, medical and imaging director of the Memorial Center for Integrative Endocrine Surgery in the Memorial Healthcare System, has been elected President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Dr. Harrell will begin his one-year term after the AACE 23rd Annual Scientific & Clinical Congress adjourns in Las Vegas, Nevada. As president, Dr. Harrell will supervise all functions of AACE in the promotion of endocrinology as a subspecialty of medicine.
“It is a high honor to serve the 6,500 members ofAACE at a time when medicine is experiencing a dramatic transformation in the United States and abroad,” said Dr. Harrell, a founding member ofAACE. “We will work to steer endocrinology towards a better endocrine care model, while maintaining the sanctity of the doctor/patient relationship. We will also continue to promote the value of our subspecialty to patients, the media, health care regulators, hospital systems, insurers and employers.”
Dr. Harrell received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was awarded the prestigious Morehead Fellowship in Medicine. Dr. Harrell did a clinical and research fellowship in endocrinology at Duke University, developing a special interest in parathyroid, thyroid and adrenal disease. He is credited for pioneering office neck ultrasonography while he worked at the Cleveland Clinic Florida, where he was the first Chief of Endocrinology. Dr. Harrell subsequently became the Director ofMetabolic Outcomes for the North Broward Hospital District in Fort Lauderdale in 1999. There, he began an endocrine surgical collaboration with David Bimston, MD in 2005. They consolidated and moved their endocrine surgical practice to Memorial Healthcare System in 2011 and recently welcomed a third physician into the practice – Allan Golding, MD, FACE, ECNU.
Dr. Harrell is among fewer than 300 physicians worldwide who have completed the Endocrine Neck Ultrasound Certification (ECNU) program administered by AACE, and his neck ultrasound facility is accredited by theAmerican Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM). He has performed thousands of thyroid biopsies and parathyroid localizations, and his practice is strictly and exclusively devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal tumors.
