The Elkdom officers showed up in force for a special afternoon ceremony renaming the street in front of the South Miami/ Coral Gables Elks Lodge as South Miami Elks Drive. South Miami Mayor Philip Stoddard was on hand to officiate over the event attended by numerous Elkdom dignitaries including Annie Goodrich, Lodge Manager,; Kateri Davis, Lodge Secretary; Yolanda Straile, Lodge Tile; John Sorgie, Lodge Trustee; Rick Delvecchio, Exalted Ruler; Frank Sullivan, Lodge Trustee; Reggie Hernandez, Lecturing Knight; Yolanda Woodbridge, Member as well as South Miami Vice Mayor, Walter Harris and Commissioners Robert Welsh and Gabriel Edmond.
Among the missing officers was South Miami Rotarian and Elk, Bob Straile, who was on the road crossing the United States on his bike with our South Miami paper for photo ops on the way. Meantime, his wife Yolanda, who took a pass on this road trip, is holding down the fort at the Elks Lodge in his stead.
In other club news, the Dade County Federation of Women’s Clubs recently installed new officers at a May 28 at the Cocoplum Woman’s Club. Several clubs received awards and all enjoyed a great lunch and time sharing their many good works. Outgoing President Charlyne Carruth emceed the affair before former DCFWC President Betty Lasch officiated over the installation of officers: President, Nan Simon, of the Northeast Miami Woman’s Club; 1st Vice President, Linda Hartwell, of Coral Gables Woman’s Club; 2nd Vice President Ann McAllister, of Homestead Woman’s Club; 3rd Vice President Irene Priess, of Miami Springs Woman’s Club; Recording Secretary, Sandra Colon, of Northeast Miami Woman’s Club; Treasurer, Heike Leibkuchler, of Coco Plum Woman’s Club; Auditor, Mary Ann Engel, of Woman’s Club of Hialeah; and Parliamentarian Dolly MacIntyre, of the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove.
Attention all area non profits, the West in Colonnade is offering charities an opportunity to make some extra money for special programs by participating in their annual Scoops of Hope Breakfast to benefit Give Kids the World. The breakfast is scheduled for Wednesday July 23, 7:30 – 10:30 a.m., at the hotel on 180 Aragon Ave., in Coral Gables. Tickets are $10 and charities that want to sell tickets, may take tickets on consignment and keep half of the money they collect for the tickets sold. The event will feature a great buffet breakfast, silent auction, door prizes and ice cream for breakfast much like what is offered to the seriously ill children who visit Give Kids the World Village for a free vacation with their entire family.
