On Wednesday, August 8, there is   Community Workshop regarding a “Neighborhood Protection Ordinance” at 7 p.m. in the Village Hall Chambers, 9705 E. Hibiscus Street, conducted by the mayor and other council members. “This meeting shall be an opportunity for the community to participate in and provide their input for the drafting of a Neighborhood Protection Ordinance.” For info call Village Hall at 305-259-1234.

Zoning Hearing… Then on Wednesday, August 29, also at 7 p.m., the Village of Palmetto Bay will conduct a zoning public hearing on a resolution regarding Palmer Trinity School in light of the recent ruling by the Third District Court of Appeal. “Discussion and public input will be welcome concerning the following items which may be of interest to your immediate neighborhood.” That one is also at Village Hall, 9705 E. Hibiscus Street. We’re pretty sure how the vote will go.

Candles all melted! By the way, we are offering belated birthday greetings (and apologies) to some folks we missed in the last issue, especially former mayor Eugene Flinn (July 25). Also Marti Brasovan (July 18th), Carlos Cintra (July 22nd), Melissa Dodge (July 24th) and Danny Casals (July 25th). Many happy returns and best wishes for the year ahead!

Reminder! Coming up at A. D. Barnes Park is a “Swim for Jenny” Memorial Fund event August 13-18 to help spread water safety information and learn-to-swim scholarships for underserved children in South Florida. If interested in learning more, tel. 305-665- 1626 to help a memorial that honors 12-year old Jenny Hong Nguyen who accidentally drowned after going into water too deep for her limited swimming ability. The park is located at 3401 Southwest 72nd Avenue.

FEMA notice. This won’t affect you unless you have friends or relatives outside of south Florida, but we received this from the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) in Tallahassee – “Tropical Storm Debby survivors can continue to get help from the Florida Division of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other agencies. Survivors can still apply for federal disaster assistance by calling FEMA’s toll-free helpline at 800-621-3362. Lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and assistance is available in most languages. Survivors who are deaf or hard of hearing can use the TTY line at 800-462-7585.” People may also call the helpline or visit to get updates on the status of their application and to get answers to their recovery questions.

Other numbers to keep handy: The Florida Volunteer and Donation Hotline can connect storm survivors with a local volunteer agency: 800-FL-HELP-1 (800-354-3571).
