Some special programs not just for gardeners, and more

Educational programming… we hear from the Village of Palmetto Bay Parks & Recreation Dept. that they have an Educational Workshop Series created by The Institute for Regional Conservation, and you can sign up for them now. All of the workshops will take place at Thalatta Estate Park, 17301 Old Cutler Road. First up is one called “Restoring the Link between People & Nature,” which is presented by Dr. Craig van der Heiden. “It is the belief of IRC that people can work with nature to restore ecosystems and create strong sense of place. They believe our future depends on it! Come learn a little bit about how they do this and how you can help.” The workshop takes place on April 9 at 6:00 p.m., and if you want to attend you need to sign up for it by April 6! RSVP to events@palmettobay-fl.gov or call for info at 305-259-1234, or visit www.palmettobay-fl.gov.

Their second workshop is called “Natives for Your Neighborhood,” and is presented by Lindsey Roland Nieratka. “NFYN is changing a backyard hobby into a powerful conservation tool for South Florida. This workshop will include an introduction to native landscaping, benefits to homeowners, benefits to South Florida ecosystems, how to get started, and where to buy plants.” That one takes place at the same location on May 21, 2015 and the deadline for registering for it is May 18, so you have a little more time for letting them know. Again, RSVP to events@palmettobay-fl.gov or call for info at 305-259- 1234, or visit www.palmettobay-fl.gov.

The Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club is having their Springtime Bunco Party at Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200 Street in Cutler Bay on April 18. “Come and join us for fun and friendship,” they tell us. The twice a year fund-raising event features door prizes, an auction table, baked good sale, a “treasure table” and more. It’s a fun event and a great group of ladies, and it’s for a good cause. The bunco begins at 10:00 a.m. and lunch is at 12:00 noon. Cost is $17. To make reservations or for additional info call Carol Ponzini at 305-233-3965.

On your toes! This spring, Miami Dance Festival celebrates its 12th anniversary, kicking off Saturday, April 4, with two performances (at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.) by Momentum Dance Company at the Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, in Miami Beach. General Admission $25 in advance, $30 day of show. Students and Seniors $15. Groups of 10 or more $12 each.

Established by the Founder & Artistic Director of Momentum Dance Company, Delma Iles, the Festival announces this year’s artistic works to be a joint effort of her company and other dance companies such as Carolyn Dorfman Dance from New York City and Ballet Flamenco La Rosa from Miami. Their combined mission is to move and inspire attendees with newly choreographed performances in addition to the classics. This season’s Festival promises an intriguing selection of dance companies and dance styles including modern dance, water ballet, a family day, a community dance event, as well as panel discussions and a film screening, and, a Festival staple and audience favorite, Flamenco dance. All age groups can participate and many events offer complimentary admission. On April 14 at 6:00 p.m. there’s a Lecture and Performance by the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, co-sponsored by Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus Department of Arts and Philosophy, titled Art and Legacy/The Power of Art to Transform Lives. That’s located at 300 NE Second Avenue, Miami, in Building 6, 4th floor, and it’s Free Admission.
