Florida International University celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act

A standing-room crowd greeted guests speakers who were invited by the University’s hosts to speak about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

SGAPresident, Christin “Cici” Battle welcomed the attendees on behalf of the Student Government Association and the students.

Zach Trautenberg moderated and introduced the guest speakers. The guest speakers were Ernie Martinez, Advocate for the Center for Independent Living & Chairperson of CODY, Colleen Fix, an early leader in the ADA formation and ultimate success of ADA, and El Pagnier Hudson, Assistant Vice President of Human Resources, Florida International University. The celebration also included a PowerPoint presentation of the history of the ADA presented and developed by Kathryn Trionfo, Associate Director, of FIU’s Disability Resource Center.

North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre congratulated FIU for their continued support of the ADA, recalling his background as an attorney who helped fight for those rights.

The celebration ended with the signing of proclamations by all the guest speakers, representing different segments of the community.
